James 4:7 - Give yourself to God for Him to do as He pleases with you. If you ignore the Devil, then like anyone would do, he will have to back off.
James 4:8 - If you get close to God, He will come close to you. If you have messed up in life, then confess and let God have those burdens. If you have conflicting thoughts and feel like a hypocrite, then bury yourself in God's word and clear out any distractions or activities that divide you from God - then give yourself to Him once again.
James 4:9 - "Lament and mourn and weep!" Let all the guilt, pain, sadness, despair wash over you for not being what God wants you to be. This way you will remember just how much you need Jesus and how much glory He has.
James 4:10 - Then you will have humbled yourself, for the thoughts of what you have done and why you are entitled to more will have been erased from your mind and heart. God will see this and be able to take your now empty self and fill you with His love, bringing you closer to Him.
Overall I think these texts mean that if you are willing to be close to God and let Him take care of you, then you will be happy. If you turn from Him and focus on yourself, then He can't be there for you like He wants to be, which only creates a gap between you two.
