James 4:4

James 4:4 - Those of you who love the things of this world more than God creates a gap between you and Him.  Your own choices and actions make you His enemy.

Everyone has something that they value highly.  Good scores in school.  Being the top athlete.  Getting in more deer during hunting season than Cousin Jack.  Perhaps receiving more compliments at church functions for the food you bring over the food others brought (or didn't bring at all.)  Watching every episode of a favorite TV show... and collecting stuff related to it.  Organizing events smoothly and having people know that you are the one who worked hard.  Even being known for being modest and "humble" are things some people are known for during.

When you place such things above your relationship and the time you set aside with God, then you are allowing yourself to become attached to things that are not important... things of this world.  That creates an ever widening gap between you and the One Who Loves you.  As you make this gap wider and wider, you are bringing about your own death.  For if you separate yourself from God, He can't save you.  Also, if you aren't helping Him then you are against Him... and therefore even the "best of intentions" can do more harm than good.

Be careful what you are doing in your heart.  Keep your eyes on Jesus.  Spent time with the Creator.
